In The Event of Snow

In the Event of Snow…

In the event of snow, it is always our intention to keep nursery open. There can however be particular conditions that sometimes mean that a significant number of staff cannot reach nursery or the school site is considered too dangerous. In these cases, it will be necessary to close the school.

If it has snowed heavily or heavy snow is forecast;

  • Consultation will be made first thing in the morning with key staff, the caretaker and our family of schools.
  • If the decision is taken to close school then we will update the website (http://www.southnormanton.derbyshire.sch.uk), text all parents and inform BBC Radio Derby
  • If we have to close school during the day, parents will again be notified by text and BBC Radio Derby will be informed. A skeleton staff will remain at school until all the children are collected.
  • The assumption should be that the school will be open unless parents receive a text or it is posted on BBC Radio Derby.

We have found in the past that this system works extremely effectively as long as we have all the correct mobile numbers of parents. Please check with Moira in the office that contact mobile numbers are correct.

We fully understand that for a variety of reasons you can have difficulty getting to nursery in bad weather. Please do not put yourself or any child at undue risk just to get to nursery.

If weather deteriorates during a sessions please feel free to collect your child early, in the event of this happening, we will use the texting service to contact you.

As a Family of Schools, South Normanton and Pinxton work closely together to ensure that we can provide safe access to and around each school site throughout poor weather. However, each location has its own site and access issues, or complications depending on where staff live. Therefore there may be times when some schools close and some stay open.

I fully appreciate the difficulties a school closure causes, particularly at short notice, however we must ensure that the health and safety of our children and staff is not compromised.
