It's HOT, HOT, HOT...and we're all Sun Safe Superstars! 29/06/18

It’s HOT, HOT, HOT…We are Sun Safe Superheroes!

What a hot few weeks it has been and with the weather getting hotter by the day, at nursery we have been revisiting our learning all about being safe in the sun.

We have been learning the importance of these sun safe rules…

Slip on your T shirt (this is so your skin is covered up, especially your shoulders which are vulnerable to burning.) Slop on your high factor sun cream (this is to protect your skin from sunburn) Slap on a hat (this is to protect your head from sun burn, shade your face and stop you from over heating) Slurp a drink (this is to keep your body hydrated which helps it to work properly in the hot weather. If you de-hydrate you can get sun stroke which makes you feel very poorly indeed.) If it’s really hot go and find some Shade. (This is so that your body can cool down.)

To help us to remember all of these things we have been...

  • Learning some sun safe songs

  • Talking about George the Sun-Safe Superstar and we have tried to be just like him.

  • Making sun safe badges, to be just like George

  • Searching for shady places in our nursery garden

  • Doing lots and lots of talking about how to be safe in the sun.

  • Making sure we drink lots of water to keep us hydrated

  • Playing with water to keep us cool

At nursery the children have been remembering to bring and wear their sun hats when they go to play in the nursery garden and reminding their grown ups to put on sun cream before they begin the nursery session.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child A19 reminds us that children have the right to be protected from hurt, so the grown ups looking after them have a duty to make sure they are kept safe in the sun also A24 reminds us that children have the right to access information to help keep them safe and well…just like the sun safe information from George the Sun Safe Superstar.

We have been making sure that we always have lots to drink at nursery too and we’re getting really good at recognising when we are too hot and going to find somewhere shade to cool down.

We will be using all this learning and hard work to re-apply for our Sun Safe Nurseries accreditation in a few weeks time..
