The Governing Body

The Governing Body of South Normanton Nursery School is comprised of representatives of the LEA, the Community, Parents and Staff.

All Governors complete a business interests form annually, a copy of the business interests register can be viewed on the link at the bottom of this page.

The Full Governing Body meets four times a year, and throughout the year Governors meet regularly as 2 active committees – the Resource Management Committee (RMC) and the Teaching and Learning Committee (T & L). Each Committee then feeds back to the Full Governing Body.

Name and type of Governor

Reason for becoming a Governor A glimpse into my life ....
Stephanie Astle  Headteacher I see the importance of being on the Governing body as Headteacher to work alongside the members in driving the school forward in continuous improvement. I see the Governing Body as a 'critical friend' and appreciate the open and trustworthy relationship I have built with the Chair, Isi. She and the rest of the governors have been very supportive in the early stages of my new post and I look forward to the future providing high quality childcare and education for the children of South Normanton to become independent learners and prepare them to be global citizens.  My family and I love nothing more than a long walk through the woods with our big, slobbery dog! I love standing on the sidelines every weekend watching my son play football and supporting my daughter with her dance and gymnastics. I am a very proud mum! I love listening to music, watching animated films and getting lost in a great book!

Barry Thacker

Chair of Governors

I became a Governor 16 years ago when my daughter started at The Brigg and have moved through the schools in the village including the Nursery holding the position of chair and vice chair and also secondary school County Governor looking after the interests of all 42 secondary schools in Derbyshire. I initially wanted to support and help the schools deliver a good standard of education initially for my children but has now become for our young people in the village. I am Chair of Governors at Nursery as well as working within the Department of Education advising on policies that will affect our children nationally. I enjoy contributing to events and festivals in the community particularly dressing up and have been a number of characters for the schools and village, most recently Rudolph and Pudsey (the bear not the performing dog!). I have also been Easter Bunny, Olaf. With various schools, I have supported charity work and activities and enjoy spending time with young people and helping them to discover the wider world and develop their individual personalities.

Isobel Martin

Vice- chair of Governors

I was Headteacher of The Brigg Infant School in South Normanton for 12 years before retiring at the end of August 2014. I am pleased to still be involved with the community of South Normanton through my voluntary work as a Governor and hope that my recent experience in education will be useful to the Governing Body, Headteacher and her staff. I now love spending time looking after my two young granddaughters and helping them develop through their Early Years.

When not 'child-minding', my husband and I enjoy frequent trips to France - and further afield. I also enjoy practising my French and I am a member of a choir. Family is important to me and although my three children have now grown and' flown the nest', we love to visit them or to welcome them back home for visits.
Siobhan Johnston Parent Governor I applied to be a parent governor because I really want to help our amazing nursery continue to be outstanding. Placing my daughter in this nursery was the best thing we've ever done and watching her develop is amazing. I wanted to help ensure that many more parents get to experience this and that we don't stand still but continue to move the teaching and nursery forward. I've worked in the public sector for a long time and believe in creating somewhere where every child can develop and be the best they can. In my spare time I love to ice-skate particularly with my daughter. I am working in improving my figure skating. I enjoy walking in the Peak District and getting out and about and exploring the local area. I love to be active and dont like to stay still for too long!

Charlotte Young

Parent Governor

My daughter has attended this Nursery since January 2016 and I cannot praise the staff, the environment and experiences that they provide enough for the progress my child has made in a short space of time. I wanted to give something back to the nursery and felt that my experience of being a teacher in a special school would greatly support my role as Parent Governor. As well as class teacher and extensive knowledge of SEN, additional experience includes outreach support and Pupil Premium organisation, planning and delivery in my current school. I am excited to become more involved with the Nursery and look forward to learning new things.

I have lived in South Normanton all of my life and attended this nursery and local schools myself. I live with my young family and my eldest child attends this wonderful nursery. I teach in a special school in Loughborough and enjoy many different things outside of work including exercising and socialising with other families with our children.

Emma Chamberlain

Parent Governor

Coming from a background in Neighbourhood Policing, I understand the importance of positively influencing and inspiring young minds. I have a history of Volunteering, mainly within children’s centres, working closely with families to build long term relationships.

I moved to South Normanton In May 2017, and felt it was a perfect opportunity to get involved and share my experience to further improve an already fantastic nursery.

In my spare time I enjoy seeing family and friends. I especially enjoy supporting my daughters with their hobbies. As a family we enjoy spending time outdoors walking our Labradoodle in the Derbyshire countryside and holidays to Whitby. I am the enthusiastic renovator of our century old home and painting furniture. I am very passionate about charity work and helping others.

Kimberley Jones

 Parent Governor

I have put myself forward to become a parent governor because South Normanton Nursery do such amazing work in guiding and supporting the children on their path into education, I jumped at the chance to get involved.
The nursery has done so much for my son in just a few short months, he loves school and has made lots of new friends and I put this down to the great environment the staff create.
I am so excited to be a voice for other parents and be involved with this outstanding nursery.
I enjoy spending time with my family, making frequent trips to South Wales and exploring the valleys. When we have a few spare minutes I enjoy taking the children to see our horses and jumping in lots of muddy puddles!
I work part time for our family business which allows me the time to put into this exciting new role.

Cynthia Barrett

Co-opted Governor

I have been an infant school teacher for many years at a local school. I have also worked as the Special Educational Needs Coordinator. Recently I have retired from full-time teaching and I am excited about my new role as Governor at South Normanton Nursery School and getting to know the staff and meet the parents and the children.

Ashley Enright

Co-opted Governor

I became aware of the extraordinary work being done by the whole staff at South Normanton Nursery School and the incredible results being achieved. I see the position of Governor as a tremendous opportunity to support them and truly hope that in the role of Governor I can contribute to this amazing team and to the wider community.
Outside of work I am a self confessed sport addict who will happily attempt and attend (or more usually watch on tv) a wide variety of sports.
On those weekends when I'm not binge watching the latest must see boxset I try to make the most of my National trust membership and love to visit as many of their historic and beautiful sites as possible.

Laura Poyser

Co-opted Governor

I wanted to be a Governor to play a part in supporting an outstanding nursery school and help ensure that excellent standards of learning are maintained.

I enjoy music, theatre, walking/running, travel and photography.

Ruth Davison Co-opted Governor  I am the Assistant  Headteather and work full time in nursery. I am a Co-opted Governor and have been a member of the governing body since my appointment as teacher back in 2007. I see my governing body role as very important. Firstly supporting our Headteacher Stephanie, but also helping to keep the rest of the Governing Body well informed of the teaching and learning in nursery. I am able to share with the other governors, from first hand experience, how as a staff we have the highest expectations for every child and maintain the highest possible standards for all the children in nursery as we prepare them for a life of living and learning. Outside of nursery, I love spending time at home with my family and exploring the countryside around my home. I enjoy films that make me think and songs that make smile and I listen to live music whenever I can.

Nikki Lancaster

Staff Governor

Hi, I'm Nikki. I'm a part time Early Years Educator and a Staff Governor. Being a Governor makes me feel more involved in the running of the nursery, I have been at South Normanton Nursery School since 2006 and have been a Governor before for a couple of years. As my children are now at university I have more time to offer and enjoy the nursery.  Outside nursery I enjoy being with my friends and family and love baking and gardening.
