What are the main roles of the Nursery Governors?

Governors have 3 main roles:

• To ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
• To hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
• To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent 

In association with the Headteacher, they help the nursery to provide the best possible education and care for the children at the nursery by carrying out a number of other important duties, which include the following:

• Setting the nursery’s values, vision and strategic aims, agreeing plans and policies, making creative use of resources and determining how the nursery budget is spent.
• Monitoring and evaluating performance and working with the Headteacher to challenge and support the management of the nursery.
• Ensuring that the nursery is accountable to the children and parents that it serves also to its local community, to those who fund and maintain it, as well as the staff it employs.
• Keeping up to date with national and local agendas.

Governors make regular visits to the nursery, not only for Governing Body meetings, but also to support events, meet staff and keep up to date with what is happening in the nursery itself.

Who can be a Governor?

The Governing Body is made up of people from all sections of the community and all walks of life. Governors can be parents, staff at the nursery, residents from the nearby community or representatives from local places of worship or businesses. It is important that they can work as part of a team and can give a commitment of their time to nursery as there are regular meetings and events.
