Christmas Activity Day and Sensory Room Opening: 03/12/14

Our Christmas activity day was and Sensory Room grand opening was an amazing success!

Even though the weather was chilly, we welcomed more visitors than ever before including parents, grandparents and  childminders  joining in with seasonal activities, in nursery and in the nursery garden. We also welcomed staff from other South Normanton schools and the South Normanton Childrens' Centre to see our new Sensory Room.

We learnt about the traditional  religious and non religious celebrations that take place at this time of year including decorating the Christmas tree, going to church and eating special food.

In our nursery, decorated ready for Christmas, our children and families enjoyed making Christmas decorations and reindeer pictures, writing letters to Santa, which they posted in out post box,  making starry night pictures and making reindeer food to help Rudolf to find his way to their houses on Christmas Eve. We also decorated our Christmas tree and made some snowman lollies...yum!

Those brave enough to venture outside, wrapped up warm to make natural christmas tree cards or throw snowballs into the snowman's tummy, in the nursery garden!

Everone enjoyed spending some time in our brand new sensory room!

We are all very excited about this new addtion, which enhances the facilities at our already outstanding nursery. It is now fully functional and being used to support the learning and enhance the curriculum for all of our children, by providing an exciting multi-sensory experience including the following:

  • Fully Interactive audio, video and aroma machine which can be linked to our themes in nursery.
  • Calming light and sound including a giant colour change bubble tube.
  • Ultra-violet lighting to highlight signing.
  • A visually stimulating sound to light panel which converts speech and singing into beautiful patterns and colours.
  • Ceiling star projector for the ultimate relaxing experience.

Sensory Magic, the hi-tech computer system in the new room has a sophisticated upload  facilty, enabling us to fully personalise the experience for the children by using their own pictures, photos and voice recordings.

It is fully interactive not only for the staff, but also for the children who will be able to control and change the way the room looks, sounds and smells.

Both children and visitors alike loved the new interactive 'Frozen' theme that we created for the opening.

We welcomed a very special visitor to open the room in the morning. We were very happy to see South Normanton Nursery's previous Headteacher Mrs Barbara Morrison to cut the tinsle and declare the new Sensory Room open. Also our current headteacher Ms Angela Colmar, enjoyed her final Activity Day with us and spoke to us about her 7 years at South Normanton Nursery School.

Many thanks to everyone for all your support on this very special day
