'Stranger Danger' and the important job that the police do - A visit from Barry Thacker: 23/01/15

We were very lucky earlier in the term to have a visit from retired police officer Barry Thacker. Barry, who is also our vice chair of governors, came into nursery as part of our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic.  We did lots of talking and learning about Barry's past role as a police officer and also the importance of being safe when you’re out and about.

We had a session in the morning and the afternoon and it was really interesting and lots of fun.

  • We learned about the important jobs that the police do.

  • We looked at the special hats that police officers wear and even tried them on!

  • We learned about being safe in the community and not talking to strangers and saying ‘no’ to people we don’t know.

  • We talked about people who wear uniforms such as police officers, fire-fighters and nurses and the fact that they can help us if we are in trouble.

  • We learned that, in an emergency, we can phone 999 to get help from the emergency services.

Visitors from the community are really valuable. They enhance our curriculum by putting our learning into context and are always very memorable.

This was also a valuable opportunity for Barry, as a governor, to come and see what we do in nursery and make a valuable contribution to the children’s learning.

A great big thank you to Barry for coming in to visit us. We had a great time and learned lots too.  We really appreciate your time and effort.
