Mix, Stir, Fry, Toss, Catch...Pancake Day Fun! 17/02/15

We had a fantastic time at nursery learning about Pancake Day.

We talked to the children about Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday and how it is the beginning of lent  where Christian people eat up all the 'nice' food in the house before the run up to the festival of Easter.

Some of our children learnt a special Pancake Day rhyme:

Mix a pancake,

Stir a pancake,

 Pop it in a pan

Fry a pancake,

Toss a pancake,

Catch it if you can!

On the dough table we used dough with rolling pins to make pretend pancakes and frying pans to practice our flipping technique  and then on the snack table we made real pancakes using flour, milk and eggs. We had to work out how to put all the ingredients together properly to make the batter and then the ladies at nursery helped to cook them safely. When we'd had a go at tossing them (which was quite tricky) we put them on a plate and ate them with orange juice and sugar. Yum! We talked about how they tasted using really good words like 'sweet', 'sticky' and 'lovely' and introduced some new words like 'tangy' and 'sharp'.
